The Società Dante Alighieri – La Dante – was founded in 1889 and, in 1893, it was established in Rome by Royal Decree of King Umberto I di Savoia for the purpose of preserving and promoting the Italian language and the wealth of cultural and social contributions of Italy to Western civilization. The Society was named in honor of the father of Italian language, Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), by a group of prominent Italians under the leadership of the great poet Giosuè Carducci.
Since its foundation, the Società has established 500 chapters (comitati) both in Italy and throughout the world. Over the years, La Dante has become an international organization, presenting the arts, science, and literature, as well as the political, social, and economic life of contemporary Italy within the global context.

The Massachusetts chapter of the Società Dante Alighieri is a non-profit organization 501 (c) (3), managed by volunteers. Our diverse membership reflects all nationalities, vocations, and ages. Although we may belong to different age-groups, different national origins, and different interests, we all share our love for Italy and for Italian culture. Membership of the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts is open to all who share an interest in the Italian culture and language.
