Dante in Boston Museums 

Presentation by Danielle Carrabino, PhD – Smith College Museum of Art

Boston is a city full of artistic treasures. In honor of the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death, we will explore key works of art in Boston Museums related to the poet. Collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Gardner Museum, and the Harvard Art Museums house many important works of art featuring Dante and the Divine Comedy. These paintings, sculptures and works on paper demonstrate the profound influence of Dante on visual art. It will conclude with thoughts on why Dante's poem and art are so interrelated.

Danielle Carrabino is Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Smith College Museum of Art, where she oversees art from antiquity until 1950. She has worked in various museums including the National Museum of Women in the Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Harvard Art Museums. In addition to her curatorial experience, she has taught art history at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the United States, England, and Italy. She has presented her research in Italian Renaissance and Baroque art at conferences and has published articles, chapters in edited books, and exhibition catalogs. Her book manuscript, nearing completion, is based on her doctoral dissertation concerning Caravaggio and Sicily.
